The Project involved the commissioning of generator synchronising and ATS control systems for two (2) units of 1.3Mw standby power stations each comprising of 2X650Kva Perkins power plants at Asokoro gardens in Abuja. The stations are to provide immediate power to different sections of the large and luxurious residential Asokoro gardens during mains failures.
The standby power generating plants were driven by Perkins diesel engines while the synchronising and load sharing system fitted on the gen sets was the DSE8610 auto synchronising and load sharing control system. The DSE8660 Auto transfer switch (ATS) control system was chosen to monitor the mains supply and transfer supplies between the standby power plant supplies and the mains supply.
The Customer required a reliable and competent local partner not only to commission the system but to also train their personnel and provide technical support when required. Hakman Engineering was at hand to provide the required solution.
All the gen sets in the station were programmed to start immediately mains supply fails, warm up, synchronise and immediately power the load. After a few minutes, the 8610 automatically activates the load demand scheme by examining the bus load and stopping any power plant running on the bus but not required to power the load to minimize unnecessary gen set capacity runs, reduce fuel consumption plant wear and tear etc. Similarly, as the load is increases, the DSE8610 automatically starts any available and unutilized gen set capacity in the system provide more power to the load.
The system functions automatically without any operator intervention.
